DOXA’s Documentary Film Series kicks off with Sundance hit Nollywood Babylon

DOXA launches its inaugural monthly screening series February 12th with the English Canada premiere of Nollywood Babylon as it comes off its critical success at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. This energetic documentary explores the explosive popularity of the world’s third-largest film industry: the Nigerian film industry.
The film’s main character, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen, is the Steven Spielberg of Nollywood. He has produced 150 films and counting despite his young age. High volume is a necessity in this booming straight to DVD business where viewers often watch three to five films a day. Nollywood film budgets, maxing out at $20,000, are solely funded by home video sales. Religious symbolism and witchcraft dominate Nollywood film plots, reflecting the conflict between traditional Nigerian and Western cultures. In this context, Nollywood filmmakers have found a way to blend traditional African storytelling with kitschy pop culture to satisfy a massive and growing audience.

Nollywood Babylon is from Canadian filmmakers Ben Addelman and Samir Mallal, directors of the award-winning documentaries Discordia and Bombay Calling, with the latter winning the NFB Colin Low Award for Most Innovative Canadian Documentary at DOXA 2006. This third collaboration continues their style of crafting thought-provoking and entertaining documentary film.

‘Incredible…impressive in its breadth, scope and access… awesome clips – think sex, love, betrayal, fire, brimstone, people being transformed into animals’ – Hour.ca

‘A fantastic Canadian documentary exploring the unknown side of the cinematographic planet’  -Twitch
